    Project Director

    Purpose

    To assume managerial responsibility and accountability of all aspects of the successful business set-up, project development, and execution of the Ahafo North Project, and subsequent handover of the operations of the new business unit to the Africa Region.

    Essential Duties

    • Single Point Accountability
      • Overall accountability for leading the Full Funds (Stage 4) for the Ahafo North project, including engineering, procurement, owner’s scope, construction, business readiness, commissioning, start up and successful achievement of commercial production.
      • Provide guidance and leadership of project development, project control and management of the business scope of work to be completed; ensure that the project is scoped, scheduled, budgeted, staffed and executed as per Newmont policy and procedure.
      • Set a delivery and innovation culture that is built on trust and acceptance of Newmont’s core values and which enables best practices to emerge throughout the project. Also, influence contractors to value the same culture.
      • Support the design and launch of a regional Inclusion and Diversity strategy that will achieve 50% female: male workforce in Ahafo North by 2023.
    • Strategic Planning and Project Execution
      • Build project and organizational capability by embracing global standards, leading-edge technology and world-class management practices.
      • Lead in matters related to Newmont’s Investment System. Facilitate, direct, schedule, and ensure all Newmont Stage Gate requirements including peer reviews, opportunity and risk management, planning and commercial reviews, mid and end of execution reviews.
      • Develop control and risk management systems that anticipate problems and provide early warning to management so major problems are avoided.
      • Develop the business (Strategic and Execution) plan including the project organization and structure, contracting strategy and resource plans.
      • Establish operational capacity, resources expertise, and systems necessary to operate the completed facilities during pre-commissioning, commissioning and start-up.
      • Responsible for the staffing of the project on both the EPCM side as well as the Owners side, etc. The team is envisaged to include approximately 25 Newmont Owners Team people, 50 EPCM workers, and 2500 contractor people at peak of construction. Ahafo North will have approximately 500 NEM people and 300 contractors to run it once it goes into operations.
      • Ensure compliance with all applicable policies, rules, laws and government regulations within Project and Operations Scope.
      • Ensure quality assurance and safety programs are established by all parties and maintained.
      • Ensure accurate and timely reporting standards are maintained throughout the project.
      • Facilitate handover facilities, support services and staff as appropriate and complete project closeout report
    • Business/Investment Planning
      • Assume overall responsibility for the delivery of project business investments within the approved investment criteria.
      • Ensure project milestones, targets and goals are aligned to the regional strategic and business plan to increase value (NPV, FCF, IRR) as well as priorities such as Safety & Health, cost control, schedule, S&ER, environmental protection and leadership development.
      • Based on the approved budget for the project, authorize commitments and expenditures within authority levels, and control costs within budget limits.
      • Become familiar with and strictly adhere to Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environmental standards. Act as a role model in complying with and supporting these standards and practices.
      • The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

    Training & Experience

    Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

    Minimum of Bachelor’s of Science in an engineering discipline, with post graduate qualifications in Project or Construction Management if possible, and/or 15 years practical managerial experience in engineering, project construction and mining operations.

    Additional Knowledge:

    • Solid foundation and experience in contemporary community relations practices and standards required.
    • Possess personal qualities of professional leadership, superior intellectual capacity, sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills and business acumen.
    • A proven track record in project execution and demonstrated commitment to the successful implementation of the project.

    Experience:

    • Experience in leading large-scale projects with diverse teams
    • Proven track record of improving productivity and profitability through innovative use of technology, cost reduction strategies, high-quality investment decisions and leading-edge management practice
    • Background in mining or natural resources with an extensive understanding of regulations, risk and operations.
    • Proven experience in attracting and retaining a high-performing and diversified leadership team, creating a teamwork environment built on coaching, development and accountability for achieving results
    • Experienced in working constructively with governments, communities, NGOs and special interest groups
    • Understanding of global economic, social, competitive and political trends
    • International breadth and exposure.

    Technical Skills:

    • Ability to build an environment that fosters ‘living safely’ and FRM as core values
    • Driving project(s) strategy through effective strategic and business planning.
    • Ability to assess current execution capability, recommend appropriate improvements and establish metrics

    Working Conditions

    Position is located on a project site environment. There may be time spent in remote or isolated areas.
    Position will be required to travel to and assist other domestic and international sites.
    Position will also require travel to various offices /facilities of the project stakeholders and contractors (EPC(M), Suppliers, Government etc.)
