JOB SUMMARY
- Nawiri Program goal is to sustainably reduce persistent acute malnutrition in Turkana and Samburu counties. Mercy Corps, consortium lead, BOMA, Save the Children Internation and other LIP is implementing Nawiri program that ends in September 2027. The program integrates both nutrition specific and sensitive interventions that address drivers of acute malnutrition at the individual, household, community and systems level. Rural Entrepreneurship Access Project (REAP) for Nutrition (R4N), a poverty graduation model for nutrition outcomes, is one of the interventions under Nawiri that targets nutritional vulnerable and ultra poor households and sequence, layer and integrate core graduation and complimentary interventions to enable targeted households graduate out of extreme poverty and under nutrition.
- Under the supervision of Field Officer directly and indirectly by Program Coordinator, the mentor will be responsible for providing time bound 18th months adapted coaching, mentorship and monitoring of ultra poor and nutritional vulnerable households towards their journey out of extreme poverty and under nutrition. As a system actor in the reduction of PAM at scale, R4N mentor prepares participants, their businesses and savings groups provides information, services and products including nutritious food, income, access to markets etc to non R4N participants in last mile communities.
Responsibilities
TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in participant selection and enrollment of individuals and their households in R4N program through established and agreed criteria.
- Provide time bound (18th months) coaching, mentorship and monitoring of ultra poor and nutritional vulnerable households towards their journey out of extreme poverty and under nutrition.
- Organize enrolled participants to establish and nurture various groups; umbrella business groups, livestock aggregation groups or other value chain aggregation groups, savings groups as per the program design.
- Support targeted ultra poor households identify, establish and run viable and profitable businesses that delivers products, goods, services and information to last mile communities aligned to program goal.
- Build strong relationships with program participants and local leaders at village level that creates a sense of self-motivation and agency to sustain a journey out of poverty and under nutrition
- Collaborate with CHPs and CHAs to conduct monthly nutritional screening of children under five years and women of reproductive age under R4N, facilitating referrals and treatment of all SAM and MAM cases.
- Conducting monthly group coaching at savings group level and follow at household level on quarterly basis through a structured process – Household Visioning and Action Plan concept.
- Conduct monthly business groups mentorship activities, market and financial linkages with other system actors as per the program design.
- Conduct monthly savings groups capacity building activities including facilitating savings and lending sessions, financial literacy trainings, registration of savings groups and linkages with PSPs and financial system actors
- Conducting monthly nutritional education and counselling, WASH, SSBC and Livelihood diversification on monthly basis as per the program design.
- Coordinate with USAID Nawiri and community frontline workers including GIRL H mentors, BOY Group mentors, Male champions, CHPs, CHA, AM2MSG lead mothers, Producer group lead farmers at location level to drive one Nawiri approach in addressing Persistent Acute Malnutrition.Participate in health facility monthly data review meetings
PROGRAM MONITORING AND REPORTING
- Collect data in a structured process as per M&E plan to track the progress of individuals, households, business groups and savings groups towards graduation.
- Data integrity: Adherence to data quality as outlined in data quality SoP.
- Maintain monthly HH, BGs and SGs mentor performance key performance indicators as outlined in M&E plan.
- Utilize all assigned monitoring tools and data collection tools as guided by Field Officer, M&E and IT departments.
- Maintain all working tools, tablets and motorcycles in good working condition at all times, fuel logs and other repairs are submitted on time.
- Prepare participants for BHA and other important visits at the community level.
- Participate in weekly, monthly and quarterly review and reflection meetings, planning meetings as planned.
- Any other assignments as guided by your supervisor.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
- Diploma in community health and nutrition, public health, community development, social work, or another related discipline.
- At least two years’ experience in similar community work; with proven experience in data collection
- Have a valid motorcycle license A1/A2 and has experience on how to ride a motorcycle
- Possess excellent soft skills - interpersonal skills; communication, empathy, problem solving, conflict resolution, collaboration,
- Have basic experience in mobile data collection, Microsoft office, self-driven, and able to work with minimum supervision
- Ability to utilize data to make informed decisions
- MUST be a resident of respective village in which R4N interventions will be implemented.

Mercy Corps, consortium lead, BOMA, Save the Children Internation and other LIP is implementing Nawiri program that ends in September 2027. The program integrates both nutrition specific and sensitive interventions that address drivers of acute malnutrition at the individual, household, community and systems level. Rural Entrepreneurship Access Project (REAP) for Nutrition (R4N), a poverty graduation model for nutrition outcomes, is one of the interventions under Nawiri that targets nutritional vulnerable and ultra poor households and sequence, layer and integrate core graduation and complimentary interventions to enable targeted households graduate out of extreme poverty and under nutrition.
- Under the supervision of Field Officer directly and indirectly by Program Coordinator, the mentor will be responsible for providing time bound 18th months adapted coaching, mentorship and monitoring of ultra poor and nutritional vulnerable households towards their journey out of extreme poverty and under nutrition. As a system actor in the reduction of PAM at scale, R4N mentor prepares participants, their businesses and savings groups provides information, services and products including nutritious food, income, access to markets etc to non R4N participants in last mile communities.

- Participate in participant selection and enrollment of individuals and their households in R4N program through established and agreed criteria.
- Provide time bound (18th months) coaching, mentorship and monitoring of ultra poor and nutritional vulnerable households towards their journey out of extreme poverty and under nutrition.
- Organize enrolled participants to establish and nurture various groups; umbrella business groups, livestock aggregation groups or other value chain aggregation groups, savings groups as per the program design.
- Support targeted ultra poor households identify, establish and run viable and profitable businesses that delivers products, goods, services and information to last mile communities aligned to program goal.
- Build strong relationships with program participants and local leaders at village level that creates a sense of self-motivation and agency to sustain a journey out of poverty and under nutrition
- Collaborate with CHPs and CHAs to conduct monthly nutritional screening of children under five years and women of reproductive age under R4N, facilitating referrals and treatment of all SAM and MAM cases.
- Conducting monthly group coaching at savings group level and follow at household level on quarterly basis through a structured process – Household Visioning and Action Plan concept.
- Conduct monthly business groups mentorship activities, market and financial linkages with other system actors as per the program design.
- Conduct monthly savings groups capacity building activities including facilitating savings and lending sessions, financial literacy trainings, registration of savings groups and linkages with PSPs and financial system actors
- Conducting monthly nutritional education and counselling, WASH, SSBC and Livelihood diversification on monthly basis as per the program design.

- Utilize all assigned monitoring tools and data collection tools as guided by Field Officer, M&E and IT departments.
- Maintain all working tools, tablets and motorcycles in good working condition at all times, fuel logs and other repairs are submitted on time.
- Prepare participants for BHA and other important visits at the community level.
- Participate in weekly, monthly and quarterly review and reflection meetings, planning meetings as planned.

JOB SUMMARY
- The Field Officer position is responsible for the delivery of program outputs and coordination of Mentors in the assigned region. The holder of this position shall report to the assigned BOMA Program Manager. He/she shall Provide direct supervision to Mentors on timely execution of program activity implementation within budget and on agreed targets.
Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Programmatic Duties
- Oversee and coordinate implementation of programme activities by Mentors including grant distributions, trainings, with support from the Program Manager.
- Target and identify eligible households for the REAP – LIFT Programme through Participatory methodologies and adapted participants targeting tools (including sustainable business screening and guideline) based on the set criteria.
- Orient Locational Committees members in the REAP – LIFT Programme locations and collaborate with them on targeting and implementation.
- Facilitate formation of the business groups and support community-based market assessments/or boot camps activities during business idea generation and incubation process to help the program participants identify viable and feasible green /environmental neutral businesses opportunities to run.
- Support market linkages by collaborating with the Markets and Linkages Officer, including value chain development for REAP – LIFT Programme businesses, the registration of savings groups with social services and linking REAP – LIFT businesses to markets, financial institutions, among others.
- Facilitate business groups to form savings associations that meet monthly to deposit savings which will enable members and village residents access credit for long term business growth.
- Train women on various business skills, green entrepreneurship, climate change adaptation and climate-smart technologies.
- Facilitate community conversations on climate change and sustainable environmental conservation and Natural Resource Management.
- Provide accurate and comprehensive monthly reports on the group’s performance to the Program Manager based on BOMA’s monthly reporting template.
- Coordinate with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to ensure timely and quality targeting verification, collection of baseline and end-line data and monitoring activities via digital technology
- Ensure timely and accurate timesheet submissions by the mentors supervised.
- Use Performance Insights (BOMA’s Technology Platform) to monitor data and information uploaded by mentors on performance of business and savings groups, flag off outliers and improve program results.
- Conduct regular and consistent spot checks to the business and savings groups to ensure quality in the data collected by Mentors, provide backstopping support to the mentors, including trouble shooting to ensure effective mentorship of groups.
- Adhere to weekly work schedule assigned by the Program Manager.
- Conduct business and savings groups trainings to the participants and households.
Administrative duties
- Assist in the overall recruitment process as guided by the People Department for mentor positions.
- Assist in conducting new staff onboarding, working closely with the People Department and various departmental heads/representatives.
- Assists the People Department and Training Department in identifying training needs of mentors who are his/her direct reportees.
- Support in conducting exit interviews when called upon and assist in managing the exit process/offboarding including employee clearance for respective mentors.
- Perform performance reviews for Mentors and implement the outcomes such as Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) where need be as guided by the People Department.
- Handle any discipline issues for the Mentors and escalate such matters beyond your scope to the Program manager and/or People Department.
- Timely reporting of any people matters relating to the Mentors to the Program Manager and People Department i.e. Leave planning, Welfare issues affecting mentors.
- Perform any other relevant duty as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Degree or Diploma in Community Development, Social Sciences, Business Management, Project Management or any other relevant field from a recognized institution.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience for Degree holders and at least 5 years of relevant experience (in a similar role in the Northern Kenya) for the Diploma holders.
REQUIRED COMPETENCES
- Demonstrable ability to coordinate field activities.
- Excellent people management skills.
- Proven competency/experience in data collection and basic analysis.
- Possession of self-drive; able to work with minimal supervision.
