Urban Planning Manager at Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP)

Responsibilities

• Gather information on international best practices and apply lessons learned locally. Identify strategic priorities and opportunities.
• Conceptualise, draft, and review technical documents, including feasibility studies, concept designs, and reports, ensuring that outputs meet professional standards and are delivered on time.
• Organise surveys to gather primary data on infrastructure quality and user behaviour to inform project plans.
• Serve as the Kenya country lead at ITDP, developing engagement strategies and interacting with a range of stakeholders including government officials, politicians, civil society representatives, media, and others to build support for sustainable and equitable urban transport.
• Ensure that the country team is operating within organisational guidelines and procedures.
• Work with the communications team to create communications materials that facilitate implementation of ITDP initiatives.
• Prepare progress reports and other ad hoc reports.
• Support the preparation of funding proposals and budgets.
• Facilitate internal capacity building.
• Perform any other task assigned.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in city planning, urban design, architecture, transport planning, or other relevant field.
• At least seven years of relevant professional experience.
• Familiarity with urban planning practices and regulations in East Africa.
• Strong communication skills, including preparing effective graphics and making powerful presentations. Ability to communicate complex transport issues through concise, compelling messages, verbally and in writing.
• Team player who excels at building trusting relationships with clients and colleagues.
• Excellent research and analytical skills. You should enjoy working with numbers!
• Demonstrated ability to manage people and projects to successful outcomes.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects with flexibility, work well under pressure, and keep to deadlines.
• Ability to maintain high standards while contributing pragmatic ideas.
• Strong commitment to advancing ITDP’s mission and to environmental and social justice.
• Availability to travel frequently.
