    Internal Communications Specialist

    Task description
    Under the direct supervision of the Internal Communication Specialist in the Communication Division of UNEP, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

    • Support the implementation of UNEP internal communication plans and strategies, targeting over 3,000 personnel in Nairobi and 42 duty stations, including regional and country offices, worldwide.
    • Manage live and virtual events, including UNEP monthly Global Townhall chaired by UNEP Executive Director and moderated by the Chief of Staff on Microsoft Teams.
    • Provide support to virtual dialogues on UNEP’s three pillars, climate, nature and pollution, and in-person events to celebrate International UN Days, including World Environment Day, International Day of Clean Air, and International Day of Zero Waste.
    • Develop promotional banners and run-of-shows for internal events when required.
    • Liaise with vendors to procure branded materials for UNEP’s events.
    • Manage budget process for internal events.
    • Moderate events when required.
    • Liaise with UNEP personnel to organize and coordinate webinars, trainings and meetings.
    • Develop content for UNEP internal channels, including weekly newsletters, UNEP intranet and iSeek (UN Secretariat Intranet).
    • Write stories about UNEP personnel and internal events.
    • Update UNEP intranet and iSeek on a regular basis.
    • Collect data and monitor internal communication channels and staff engagement activities.
    • Provide support to organize and promote the Kipepeo Awards that recognize UNEP personnel for their teamwork, innovation and impactful programmes, projects and/or initiatives.

    Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

    • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
    • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
    • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
    • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
    • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
    • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

    Results/Expected Outputs

    • Deliver smooth virtual events on Microsoft Teams
    • Create good relationships with UNEP stakeholders, including personnel from other divi-sions, regional and country offices, UNEP partners and vendors
    • Develop well-crafted messages and articles
    • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment
    • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed

    Required experience

    • 3 years of experience in communication and media in national and international contexts, including in events management, graphic design, article drafting, and stakeholder liaison.
    • Experience in increasingly responsible roles within communication, public information, journalism, and/or event management.
    • Comfortable interacting with key stakeholders, high-level speakers, and third-party agencies,
    • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills,

    Legal Officer

    Responsibilities

    • Provide legal and procedural support to the process on (i) the organization of the INC meetings; (ii) research into substantive and procedural legal questions including advice on rules of procedure; and (iii) preparation of pre-session documents that address legal questions, including drafts texts of a legal instrument.  
    • Handles a range of issues related to constitutional, international, public, private, administrative, and, for Tribunals, criminal (substantive, procedural and comparative) law, including the interpretation and application of constitutive, legislative and other instruments governing United Nations activities and operations, in consultation with senior Legal Officers or Prosecuting Trial Attorneys.  
    • Conducts extensive legal research and analysis and prepare studies, comparative studies, briefs, reports and correspondence.  
    • Undertakes basic or extensive review of legal documents, instruments, or other material; identifies important issues, similarities, and inconsistencies.  
    • Prepares or assists in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports, legislative texts and commentaries on those texts, teaching materials in the field of international trade law and private international law.  
    • Prepares or assists in the preparation of legal opinions/advice on a wide range of international public or private law issues, including the United Nations Charter, General Assembly resolutions and decisions involving, inter alia, issues relating to privileges and immunities, peace and security, criminal prosecutions, institutional questions, treaty law and practice, procedural issues arising during meetings of United Nations organs, constitutional and administrative law of the Organization.  
    • Prepares or assists in the preparation of agreements and contracts with governments, NGOs and other public and private entities, as well as in the negotiation and settlement of claims and disputes and in handling private international law and international trade law matters.  
    • Reviews, advises on and drafts indictments or legal motions/submissions.  
    • Assesses evidence for relevance and admissibility.  
    • Prepares and assesses briefs of evidence.  
    • Services or assists senior colleagues in servicing diplomatic conferences, commissions, committees, task forces, expert groups and other bodies, including preparation of background materials, summaries of issues and views of delegations, meeting reports.  
    • Assists in representing the Organization before arbitral and other tribunals or administrative proceedings, including disciplinary cases; in Tribunals, acts on behalf of the Prosecutor as junior co-counsel in proceedings before Trial or Appeal Chambers.  
    • Provides legal advice on human resources matters, reviews administrative matters.  
    • Administers programmes of legal technical assistance.  
    • Prepares or assists with the preparation of international trade law seminars and symposia, lecture on various legal issues at such events.  
    • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.  
    • Provides guidance to junior staff.  
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law, including legal analysis, research and drafting is required.    
    • Experience with Staff Regulations and Rules, policies, procedures and operations of the United Nations or other similar international organization is desirable.    
    • Experience working in a legal office of an international intergovernmental organization, law firm, legal office of a government or legal office of a court is required.    
    • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    One Health Intern

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of the One Health Coordinator of the Transformation and Mainstreaming of Nature Unit, the intern will:  

    • Assist the OH Team in organizing meetings and workshops to take place in Kenya and/or other countries, including preparing documents and managing logistics, to support Quadripartite and Nature4Health activities and achieve programmatic results;  
    • Develop key communications materials, in print, online and for social media;  
    • Support the OH Team in drafting technical documents;
    • Communicate with partners, consultants, implementers etc. on programmatic activities to support programmatic results;  
    • Undertake targeted desktop research to compile background information, facts, data and other pieces to inform technical inputs including on One Health topics;
    • Assist in tracking key policy developments;  
    • Undertake other tasks as required, and in accordance with the intern's interests and experience.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).  
    • Master’s Degree or currently enrolled in a Master’s Programme in health sciences, One Health, environmental management, biodiversity conservation and management, development studies, social sciences or a related field is required;   In addition to: Be computer literate in standard software applications.  
    • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.  
    • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    • Demonstrated experience in One Health policy or implementation is required; Master’s Degree or currently enrolled in a Master’s Programme in health sciences, One Health, environmental management, biodiversity conservation and management, development studies, social sciences or a related field is required; Demonstrated experience sustainable development is desirable.
    • Experience in organising events, conferences or meetings is desirable.
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills are required.
    • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable

    • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
    • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
