The Transformational Power of Language’ is a growing focus within our work to reframe the narrative and language used to describe and position FGM. Typically, FGM has been described and understood as a ‘cultural practice’ a tradition, or a ‘norm’ - language which can serve to excuse or defend it and can alienate survivors by minimising its seriousness. We aim to shift the narrative to describe FGM as a form of violence and abuse against women and girls, and a violent, criminal act, that is generated by inequality and discriminatory social norms.
