Responsibilities

• The objective of this internship is to assist the team in charge of the coordination of UN-Habitat’s work on urban crisis prevention and response at Headquarters, which currently focuses on: the implementation of the UN-Habitat global programme on urban migration and displacement;
• the development and coordination of UN-Habitat response to crises in urban contexts, including development and backstopping of selected country programmes of UNH;
• the engagement of UN-Habitat in the implementation of the Secretary General’s Action Agenda for Solutions to Internally Displaced People (IDPs);
• the preparation of UN-Habitat’s contribution to flagship events in 2025 such as World Habitat Day;
• the coordination of programme development, reporting and monitoring. Depending on his/her profile, the intern will support the activities related to the development, implementation and monitoring of programmes/projects, strategies and work programmes, projects, tools, outreach activities of UN-Habitat, and ad hoc operational support to the related functions of the team in charge of urban crisis prevention and response (Subprogramme 4 in UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2020-2025), within the Programme Development Branch, Global Solutions Division. Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer,
• the Intern’s main duties include:
• Drafting knowledge products and working documents, reports and correspondence or concept notes; b) Mapping and analysis of UN-Habitat current portfolio in the field of urban crisis prevention and response, to support the identification of good practices and scale-up of interventions;
• Support in preparing communication materials to enhance the promotion of UN-Habitat’s work on crisis prevention and response, targeting both internal and external audiences
• Desk studies (of documents, reports, and internet searches) related to urban crisis/urban migration, specifically for planning for future projects. e) Support in arranging for and participating in internal and external meetings. This will involve both organizational and substantive tasks, such as preparation of contributions, development of agendas, logistical support, reporting and follow-up actions.

Qualifications/special skills

• Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
• Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),
• Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent),
• Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
• Preferred areas of study: The candidate must be currently enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree, or an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in urban, humanitarian or development studies, social or political science, Business administration, public information, or a related field.

Responsibilities:

Within delegated authority, the Individual Contractor will be responsible for the following duties:

• Develop, implement, and evaluate assigned programmes/projects. Monitor progress, analyze implementation challenges, and propose corrective actions. Ensure timely follow-up with relevant stakeholders.
• Conduct consulting assignments in collaboration with clients, facilitate workshops, lead interactive sessions, and support the development of actionable change management strategies.
• Gather, analyze, and present information from diverse sources. Support policy development through issue analysis, trend evaluation, and preparation of research studies and evaluations.
• Design and implement survey initiatives, develop data collection tools, analyze responses, and identify key findings to support decision-making.
• Prepare high-quality written outputs, including background papers, analytical reports, and contributions to publications.
• Provide substantive support to consultative meetings, conferences, and workshops by preparing agendas, identifying participants, and coordinating documents and presentations. • Lead outreach activities, conduct training sessions, facilitate seminars, and deliver presentations on relevant topics.
• Lead and participate in complex field missions, providing guidance to external consultants, government officials, and other stakeholders while preparing mission reports and summaries.
• Coordinate budget-related activities, including programme/project funding proposals, financial reporting, and preparation of key budget-related documents.
• Support in the resource mobilization efforts by identifying funding opportunities and developing project proposals,

Qualifications/special skills

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in architecture, civil engineering, urban and regional planning, economics or physical sciences relevant to development and management of human settlements or a related field is required.
• A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human settlements, project or programme management or related field is required.
• Experience working in or familiarity with the regional context, including urban development challenges in East Africa, is an added advantage
• Proven experience in human settlements development fields, projects/programme design and implementation with the UN or other international agencies is desirable.

• Conduct research and spatial analysis on displacement-affected communities and urban resilience in Somalia.
• Develop urban planning documents, with a focus on integrated settlement planning.
• Analyze land governance frameworks and provide recommendations for improving tenure security.
• Conduct risk assessments related to urban development, displacement, and climate change adaptation.
• Facilitate engagement with relevant stakeholders, including government entities and community representatives.
• Prepare technical plans and reports on land administration and settlement upgrading.
• Produce detailed mapping and data analysis to inform planning and policy decisions.
• Contribute to knowledge-sharing and policy development on Durable Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Qualifications/special skills

• Advanced University degree in Urban and Regional Planning, or Architecture and Urban Planning, or Urban Management or any other relevant field to urban planning management and design is required.
• A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• At least two years working experience in urban planning and design, urban management and participatory planning processes and /or local governance matters is required
• Previous work experience related to working with displacements or environmental context is required
• Previous work experience working with international agencies is a major asset.
• Application skills in geo-data software (Arc GIS, Quantum GIS, AutoCAD and others) is required for the position. Working experience with government entities in Somalia is a major asset

Duties and Responsibilities

• The consultant’s main responsibilities are clustered in two pillars. First, to support the activities of the Everyone Can Flourish project between UN-Habitat’s SDG Localization and Local Governments team and the Åland Island, specifically in terms of research and knowledge creation.
• The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks: Lead research and knowledge creation for a research paper in coordination with partners.
• Prepare the content for the toolbox website. Second, to support the Young Gamechangers Initiative, with the following duties: Assessing and Enhancing Youth Engagement: Continuously evaluating governance, digital engagement, and inclusive public spaces with a particular focus on young women, and developing strategies to enhance youth participation in these areas across different countries.
• Developing comprehensive research frameworks that address youth and governance, alongside contributing to the design of educational curriculums that support the initiative's goals.
• Reporting Line This post is located under the Global Solutions Division of UN-Habitat and specifically within its SDG localization and local governments team. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the Government of Åland as the co-lead of the project. The incumbent will work part-time under the leadership of the Coordinator of the SDG Localization and Local Governments Team and the Young Gamechangers’ programme manager.

Qualifications/special skills

• Advanced university degree in planning, public policy, and management, connected to the fields of creativity and innovation, international development, urban planning, and policy, human geography, statistics, or other related fields is required Ph.D. is preferred.  
• At least five (5) years of experience working in the field of sustainable development and policy is required.  Working experience on the Agenda 2030 and the local implementation of the SDGs will be highly valued. Experience working in city systems and planning roles. 
• Experience in monitoring, evaluation, research, and youth focussed training. 
• Excellent research skills are an asset. 
• Experience and knowledge of young people, health and well-being, and research are required.
