    Mine Operations Superintendent

    About The Job

    About This Role

    • To direct and lead all Mine Operations staff in the execution of Mine Operations activities in the early project stages and operational phase for all mine pit locations at Ahafo.

    In This Role
    Mine Operations Planning:

    • Plan and organize mine production operational requirements including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, water and project tasks.
    • Provide planning and oversight with respect to statutory guidance for blast monitoring.
    • Work to produce operating budgets, in conjunction with engineering and develop and write AFE justifications.

    Coordinate with Mine Maintenance on the implementation of equipment replacement plans.
    Mine Operations Tactical Execution:

    • Develop robust Mine Operations workplans; communicate and distribute these to the General Foremen of their respective areas.
    • Manage and monitor the workplans and adjust, when and where required.
    • Train and hold the Mine General Foreman accountable on job requirements.
    • Address work performance issues and correct them timeously.
    • Oversee that all mine equipment is properly and efficiently operated.
    • Confirm that Environmental and Social Responsibility policies and procedures in the Mine Operations area are being adhered to.
    • Lend support to infrastructural capital projects.
    • Produce Management reports monthly.
    • Maintain responsibility for the section's annual budgets (i.e. Operations and Capital Expenditures). This needs to be maintained on a monthly basis.
    • Liaise with mine maintenance on operational needs as well as feedback on equipment performance.

    Underground Integration:

    • Maintain constant communication with Underground on blasting times and changes.
    • Maintain safe vehicle (LV and HV) interaction between surface and underground equipment.
    • Maintain overall responsibility for handling mining material.
    • Manage the mine waste, ore and equipment interactions.
    • Mine Operations Optimization and Continuous Improvement:
    • Embark upon and drive continuous improvement objectives and processes to enhance the yield of material mined.
    • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and implement those best suited to Mine Operations activities.
    • Investigate alternative ways to improve production, productivity, safety, and cost reduction and implementing these accordingly.
    • Participate actively in Newmont’s Full Potential Steering Committee meetings.
    • Manage the capital program for Mine Operations

    As an Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) manager for sustaining capital ensure:

    • Timeliness in Submission of AFEs.
    • Quality of Submitted AFEs.
    • Timeliness of capital spend.

    As a Cost Centre Manager with sustaining operational capital expenditure, ensure:

    • Sustaining capital expenditure will be within set target ranges, adjusted for changes in planning assumptions and decisions.

    As an AFE Manager with a closed project ensure:

    • Prompt closing out of projects.
    • Project deliverables have been met.

    Health and Safety Management:

    • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his / her supervision.
    • Provide hands-on assistance during operations activities and ensuring that safe work practices are followed.
    • Conduct periodic Critical Control verifications, Safety Interactions, safety meetings and inspections. 
    • Oversee quality of JHA and FRA in department.
    • Attend monthly safety inspection and meetings.
    • Implementation and maintenance of Newmont safety initiatives in surface mining department.

    Stakeholder Management and Engagement:

    • Co-ordinate all operational activities with the Technical Services Department and Mine Maintenance section.
    • Liaise with the Chief Mining Engineer, Senior Geologist, Maintenance Superintendent and Process Superintendent on all planning and operational execution issues.
    • Liaise with the Training Department to confirm that all operational training requirements are developed and scheduled.
    • Provide input into and review all mine production and maintenance schedules, in conjunction with other senior mine management team.
    • Liaise with the Health and Safety Department to align and confirm that Mine Operations meets established statutory standards in the operation of the mine.
    • Manage designated on-site contractors to provide safe and cost-effective services.
    • Oversee the coordination and implementation of reclamation exercises, in conjunction with Technical Services and S&ER function and measure Mine Operations against functional reclamation targets.

    Maintain ongoing communications with the Minerals Commission with respect to:

    • Individual statutory certifications.
    • Statutory requirements with respect to mining regulations (i.e. blasting, technical, safety, closure).
    • On-site statutory reportable accidents or incidents. (i.e. Fires, unplanned detonation, wall failures etc.).

    Training & Experience
    Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

    • Bachelors’ Degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering, or an equivalent qualification and satisfies the requirements of the Minerals and Mining
    • (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, 2012. L.I. 2182 Regulation 37.

    Additional Knowledge:

    • Mine Superintendent Certificate of Competency from the Inspectorate Division of Minerals Commission as a minimum.
    • Mine Manager Certification from the Inspectorate Division of Minerals Commission (desirable).

    Experience:

    • Minimum of 10 – 12 years’ experience in a mining environment, with a minimum 6 – 8 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity.
    • Prior experience managing and administering CAPEX and OPEX budgets for a multinational organization.
    • Operational experience as a General Foreman.

    • The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job.
    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to sit at a desk for extended periods, climb stairs, walk and stand.
    • Work Environment: The noise level in the field environment is minimal. Occasional exposure to noise, fumes, high temperature hazardous materials, sharp edges, dust, pinch points, vibration, slippery surfaces, extreme weather conditions.
    • Protective Equipment (PPE): Work requires mandatory PPE such as helmet, goggles, high visible clothing, life jackets/vest, safety harness, ear plugs and dust mask according to working conditions.
    • Incumbent is expected to work a 5:2 day cycle and 9 hour shift; but required on some occasions, to work additional hours as may be needed for the business.
