    Professor Grade 3A - Science and Computing

    Job Specification

    The duties and responsibilities entail:

    • Developing research proposals to attract grants to support graduate students and staff development as well as improving on the existing body of knowledge.
    • Carrying out research and disseminate the results through workshops, seminars, symposia, conferences and publications for community and institutional benefit.
    • Publishing books, articles to be used in teaching, references and give room for further research to be carried out.
    • Reviewing existing research and academic journals for effective teaching and learning to take place therefore achieving the University Mandate.
    • Preparing and reviewing curricula and course contents for continual improvement to meet ever changing needs and market demands.
    • Preparing course descriptions, course outlines, teaching aids, specimens and appropriate modes of delivery for effective teaching and learning process to take place.
    • Supervising and guiding young scholars and postgraduate students to ensure appropriate quality curriculum delivery and research output is achieved.
    • Transfering knowledge including practical skills, methods and techniques for perpetuity.
    • Challenging thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rationale thinking.
    • Setting, marking and assessing work and examinations and provided feedback to students.
    • Ensuring that the teaching content and methods of delivery promote equal opportunities and respond to issues relating to all staff and students needs.
    • Initiating collaboration and linkages with organizations and Universities locally and internationally for exchange programs to benefit both staff and students.
    • Presenting papers and research findings in local and international conferences with the view of enhancing the University image and brand.
    • Serving in local and international committees to provide high level expertise for informed decision making to benefit the University as a whole.
    • Overseeing and guide other members of staff to prepare reports and publications that can be used at the University, departmental and schools level.
    • Developing strategic policies and procedures that can guide in efficient training and learning processes and therefore contribute to realization of the University mandate.
    • Chairing committees and participate in institution decision-making and governance.
    • Leading and developing internal and external networks to foster collaboration and share information and ideas.
    • Providing and marketing the work of the department in the subject, both nationally and internationally.
    • Exercising academic leadership for area of expertise, teaching and research activity.
    • Acting as a line manager, supervising the work of others e.g. research teams, project teams or as a PhD/Masters supervisor.
    • Appraising and advising staff on personal and career development plans.
    • Developing policies for Senate approvalto guide running of the University.
    • Serving as external examiner in local and international Universities to enable exchange of ideas for academic excellence.
    • Assessing students during industrial attachment and teaching practice to ensure appropriate theoretical and practical application at the end of the course.
    • Dealing with referred issues for students within own educational programs.
    • Acting as personal tutor and mentor, giving first line support to students.
    • Providing first line support for colleagues, referring them to sources of further help if required.

    Person Specification

    For appointment to this post, a candidate must:

    • Have an earned Ph.D. or equivalent Degree qualification  in the relevant field from an accredited and recognized university.
    • Have at least three (3) years teaching experience as an Associate Professor SEKU Grade 4 or equivalent and Research experience.
    • Have a minimum of sixty (60) equivalent publication points since attaining Associate Professorship or equivalent, of which at least forty (40) should be from refereed scholarly journals.
    • Have Supervised a minimum of five (5) postgraduate students to completion including at least two (2) at doctoral level as an Associate Professor.
    • Be registered with the relevant professional body (Where applicable).
    • Have attracted research or development funds as an Associate Professor or equivalent.
    • Have international authority on a specialist field; acknowledged for his/her contributions to the development of principles, practices and research in the field across international boundaries.
    • Proficiency in computer applications.
    • Satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity.
