    Data Analyst

    • Conservation Alpha is seeking a Data Analyst to support diverse clients with data management and data analytics. This is a supporting role, working as part of the data science team to provide specific insights, developing models and visualisations for a range of client-facing projects. Ideal candidates will have solid foundation in data management, experience in R and/or Python, a strong statistical foundation and an interest in biodiversity or conservation science. The position offers opportunities for career growth and skills development tailored to the candidate's strengths and interests. The Data Analyst will report to the Director of Science of Conservation Alpha but provide project support to the entire team.
    • This position is based remotely, preferably within South Africa or Kenya.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Collect, clean, and preprocess datasets to ensure accuracy and usability
    • Conduct Statistical Analysis
    • Work with clients to understand the technical requirements of analyses and visualisations
    • Organise and maintain data and code repositories
    • Identify and collate publicly and commercially available datasets on a per-project basis
    • Work with the team to co-develop appropriate analytical approaches to meet requirements and implement them
    • Develop high-quality visualisations for clients
    • Undertake literature reviews and critically evaluate content
    • Write succinct reports and provide clear recommendations
    • Undertake code reviews and assist in documentation of processes

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • MSc in geoinformatics, biostatistics, quantitative ecology, or another related discipline
    • Minimum three years of experience working with data analysis and visualisation Right to work in country of residence

    NECESSARY COMPETENCIES

    • Experience in data curation and metadata management, particularly cloud-based platforms
    • A strong understanding of statistics
    • Experience in scripting languages like R or Python
    • Experience with common visualisation libraries, such as Plotly, ggplot2, and matplotlib.
    • Experience with effectively communicating complex results using intuitive visualisations, or visual story- telling
    • Exceptional attention to detail, especially in data management and quality control
    • Ability to work both independently and in a team, with a willingness to learn new skills

    ADVANTAGEOUS

    • PhD in a relevant field
    • Experience with working on cloud-based platforms, particularly Azure.
    • Competency in simple programmatic data ingestion tasks, such as making API calls, working with JSON, or accessing data from platforms
    • Experience with Power BI
    • Experience using Git and GitHub for version control and collaborative development
    • Demonstrate working knowledge of ArcGIS and familiarity with open-source GIS tools such as QGIS,
    • Competent in the use of Shiny, with a growing interest in application development and data visualisation
    • Demonstrated practical experience in field deployment of surveys used to solve quantitative problems in the conservation space, such as aerial census, LiDAR analyses, camera trap grid analysis etc.

    Conservation Finance Officer

    The Conservation Finance Officer will report to and support the Performance Lead and work closely with the broader team. The Conservation Finance Officer may also support Conservation Alpha on a range of other projects as needed. The position will require occasional travel related to each project and to engage with the market during the design of products. The position offers the opportunity for career and skill development dependent upon the competencies and interests of the successful candidate. This position is based remotely, preferably within South Africa or Kenya.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Work collaboratively with the Conservation Alpha team, our partners and clients to perform this role Support the identification and analysis of conservation centred sustainable financing solutions
    • Support the structuring and design of fit-for-purpose sustainable financing solutions
    • Support the research and design of impact financing mechanisms, including the development of investment strategies, business cases, and investment plans that link ecological outcomes to financial returns
    • Support the development of processes to understand the potential impacts and the estimated costs to deliver programmes
    • Assist with data collection, analysis, and presentation of financial and conservation metrics
    • Work with our network of market partners and subject experts to develop and test impact finance structures, investment strategies and impact measurement approaches.
    • Prepare clear, high-quality reports, presentations, and investment briefs
    • Support stakeholder engagement processes, including workshops with conservation NGOs, government, investors, and community partners
    • Conduct market research into sustainable finance trends, revenue models, and investment opportunities aligned with biodiversity outcomes

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Environmental Finance or related field (Masters preferable but not mandatory)
    • 5 years' experience in financial modelling, business analysis, investment planning, and/or due diligence assessments, ideally with exposure to the sustainability or conservation sectors
    • Strong analytical and data management skills, with proficiency in Excel (financial modelling) and the ability to interpret and present complex data and technical information concisely
    • Experience in writing professional business and/or investment plans and building presentations
    • Proven ability to think creatively and generate, research, design and deliver new ideas in a dynamic environment
    • The ability to effectively communicate complex financial concepts to a range of technical and non- technical stakeholders, including conservation practitioners, community leaders, investors, market representatives, and colleagues
    • Right to work in country of residence

    NECESSARY COMPETENCIES

    • Experience in the development of impact-based investment strategies preferable
    • Strong conservation interest and experience in the conservation sector
    • Good knowledge of the sustainable finance sector and market, with a clear understanding of impact investing, biodiversity-based outcomes products (bonds) and blended finance mechanisms
    • Understanding and familiarity with the policies and frameworks governing the African conservation finance landscape
    • Passion for impactful nature conservation and sustainability
    • Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups, across both the conservation and finance sectors
    • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively within an internal and external team
    • Strong project management skills to deliver projects on time and within budget
    • Organised, with exceptional attention to detail, especially when working across multiple workstreams
    • Self-motivation, capacity to learn new skills, and the ability to work independently

    Science Communications Officer

    The Science Communications Officer will report to and support the Performance Lead while working closely with the broader team to create high-quality outputs. The Science Communications Officer may also support Conservation Alpha on a range of other projects as needed. The position offers the opportunity for career and skill development dependent upon the competencies and interests of the successful candidate. This part-time position is based remotely, preferably within South Africa or Kenya.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Work collaboratively with the Conservation Alpha team, our partners and clients to perform this role Design clear, accurate, high-quality reports, presentations, and documents using the technical information provided by the team
    • Translate complex scientific, financial, and conservation concepts into clear and compelling written, audio-visual, and digital communications
    • Develop templates, style guides, and visual identity tools to maintain consistency across Conservation Alpha deliverables
    • Provide copy-editing support to the technical team to ensure that documents are accurate and professional
    • Assist with data visualisation (graphs, charts, dashboards) to clearly present analytical findings
    • Support internal knowledge management by organising and curating audio, visual and written outputs for future use
    • Manage Conservation Alpha's online presence and content
    • Contribute to Conservation Alpha's external visibility through professional communication products that highlight impact, innovation, and thought leadership

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • Degree in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology or related field with additional experience in Communications, Marketing, Design, Media Studies, etc.
    • 2-3 years' professional experience in marketing, corporate communication, science communication or similar role, ideally with exposure to the sustainability or conservation sectors
    • Proven ability to write, edit, and tailor content for technical and non-technical audiences
    • Demonstrated skills in graphic design and/or data visualisation, with proficiency in tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator), Canva, Inkscape or similar
    • Strong presentation development skills (PowerPoint or equivalent), capable of producing polished client-facing materials
    • Excellent written and spoken English; ability to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely
    • Strong organisational and time management skills, with experience meeting deadlines across multiple projects
    • Demonstrable interest in conservation, biodiversity, and/or sustainability
    • Right to work in country of residence

    NECESSARY COMPETENCIES

    • Creative, innovative thinker able to synthesise complex information into accessible, visually appealing content
    • Experience producing, designing and developing communications for a professional audience
    • Online content production and management skills are advantageous
    • Organised, with exceptional attention to detail, especially when working across multiple workstreams
    • Adaptable and comfortable switching between scientific content, business strategy, and community- level communications
    • Passion for impactful nature conservation and sustainability
    • Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups, across both the conservation and finance sectors
    • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively within an internal and external team
    • Strong project management skills to deliver projects on time and within budget
    • Self-motivation, capacity to learn new skills, and the ability to work independently
