The incumbent will undertake educational and clinical functions under the supervision of the Department Chair or delegated individuals within the department. In this role, the incumbent undertakes diagnostic procedures including grossing surgical specimens, examining histology, immunohistochemistry and cytology slides, perform FNAs and autopsies. They will also conduct learning sessions with the residents as well as participate in interdisciplinary meetings.
Responsibilities
Access and manage patients.
Work closely with laboratory technologists on the bench to ensure quality test results.
Act as a clinical liaison between the clinicians and the laboratory.
Participate in tumor boards on a regular basis.
Initiate discussions with patient and care givers to enable better diagnostic and therapeutic medical care and services.
Initiate timely discussions with relevant consultants/departments to arrive at the best treatment plan for specialized cases.
Participate in establishing various planning parameters for addressing referral cases received at AKUH.
Participate in the review and development of appropriate policies and procedures for patients’ health care to formulate best practice guidelines.
Participate in discussions with relevant members of the clinical care team to enable better integration of patient care activities.
Participate in the meticulous use of resources to enable patient safety and quality care.
Participate in departmental & institutional quality improvement and patient safety activities.
Mentorship of medical school students, interns, and residents.
Involved in research involvement – University priority and personal interest areas.
Participating in Departmental Residency Training Committee (DRTC), examination and other faculty or departmental meetings as may be determined.
Seek opportunities to attain and maintain competency in knowledge and skills to perform duties described; and
Collaborate with consultants and colleagues to enable integration of institutional quality improvement and patient wellness activities.
Perform other duties as may be assigned by department supervisor/manager.
Requirements
Master of Medicine in Clinical Pathology or equivalent.
Recognized and registered as a Clinical Pathologist by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Demonstrated competency and dexterity with all equipment utilized in the hospital environment.
Ongoing expert-level practice in clinical laboratory practice at a busy clinical service laboratory.
Excellent liaison and collaborative skills.
Exceptional teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills.
Punctual and flexibility towards work deadlines and commitments made.
Ability to lead and manage delegated tasks and small projects.
Demonstrates honesty, integrity, compassion and respect for diversity and applies ethical principles appropriately.
