    Regional Coordinator

    Role definition
    To lead and manage World Child Cancer’s (WCC) work in West Africa and advise on World Child Cancer’s work in Sub-Saharan Africa, playing a key role in improving the capacity of World Child Cancer and partners to respond to the needs of children with cancer and their families. Working closely with colleagues across the Programmes Team to develop and implement high quality and accountable programmes that attract resources, enabling us and our partners to meet World Child Cancer’s strategy.

    Role context

    This is the first Regional Manager employed by World Child Cancer. The role will sit within the Programmes Team (majority based in and managed from UK) but will have links with staff across the organisation especially with fundraising and communications staff.

    There will be travel within the region covered: Ghana, Cameroon, Malawi but also to visit possible new partners in West Africa. It could mean spending over 60 days away from base per year with trips up to 3 weeks away at any one time, although usually significantly less.

    Working with a large number of different partners to deliver programmes.

    • Successful implementation of World Child Cancer programmes in the region, through the engagement of staff, partners and beneficiaries.
    • Effective representation of World Child Cancer maintained at a high level
    • Effective capacity building in place for staff and partners on global public health, best practices in programme implementation and safeguarding
    • Positive World Child Cancer reputation and strong links in place with relevant organisations and other partners and organisations, and relevant governmental bodies
    • Enhanced funding achieved through successful relationship building with partners and institutional donors: contributions made to fundraising initiatives including appeals and applications to donors (fundraising)

    Applied skills/knowledge and expertise

    • Able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, experience and practice of global health programme development implementation and principles
    • Able to demonstrate success in leadership roles
    • Able to work autonomously motivate others to achieve results in complex situations

    Essential

    • Understanding the childhood cancer context
    • Demonstrated understanding of the different components of non-communicable disease programmes: including the clinical aspect, education and mentoring, psycho-social issues and advocacy
    • Ability to apply understanding of the political and cultural context of Sub-Saharan Africa and experience working with relevant government institutions.
    • Ability to take into account the needs, skills, capacities and experience of World Child Cancer partners and beneficiaries

    Experience

    • Experience working within global health, including policy and advocacy issues
    • Experience in development, including time spent living and working in a developing country.
    • Experience in public health programmes management.
    • Experience of using authority responsibly, in line with accountability principles and standards
    • Knowledge of capacity building tools and techniques.
    • Relevant experience, including strategic planning and management of a large and complex budget
    • Relevant experience of project/programme management.
    • Experience on public speaking and/or working with the media.
    • Experience of distance management of staff and partners.
    • Ability to foster collaborative, transparent and accountable relationships through partners, including over distance.
    • Demonstrated understanding of WHO/Government coordination and how to fit into it.

    Qualifications/Skills:

    • Degree or equivalent in relevant technical discipline
    • Proficiency in IT including the Microsoft Office Suite

    Desirable:

    • Relevant post-graduate degree in medicine, public health or related subject
    • Insight into the particular challenges of childhood cancer
    • Knowledge of the health, political, social and economic context of West Africa and the development issues and challenges it faces
    • Experience of advocacy on public health issues, in particular, non-communicable diseases
    • Fluency in any of the relevant languages in the region or other relevant languages.
