    Senior Geotechnical Engineering, Akyem Underground

    About This Role

    • The Senior Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for all geotechnical and backfill functions, systems and processes at Akyem UG. This includes making critical decisions regarding safety and production aspects.

    IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL

    Geotechnical Operational Management and Execution

    • Responsible for updating, establishing and maintaining systems and processes to ensure compliance with the Newmont Akyem Underground Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP), Ground Control Standards, and the Fatality Risk management processes.
    • Has to establish, implement, document and maintain the GCMP, standards, systems and processes to ensure ongoing updates to an integrated mine geotechnical model, containing interpretations of the geotechnical, hydrogeological, rockmass properties and behaviour data.
    • Establish, implement, document and maintain standards, systems and procedures for data collection, data management, data analysis, excavation design and mine design validation.
    • Ensure that data collection, data management, data analysis, excavation design and design analysis occur according to the defined standards, systems and procedures.
    • Ensure that processes exist and are maintained for geotechnical review and acceptance of all mining designs.
    • Ensure compliance to design by monitoring actual excavations against the designs and collaborating with relevant stakeholders further to improve future designs, planning and execution activities.
    • Ensure adequate geotechnical consideration is captured in all aspects of mine design, planning and scheduling, including short, medium and long-range mine planning and Stage gate studies.
    • Ensure developing geotechnical hazards and risks associated with mining to increasing depths are continually re-assessed and proactively managed, including seismic hazard and squeezing ground conditions.
    • Develop and implement a geotechnical risk education programme for all underground personnel.
    • Ensure management are kept informed about geotechnical concerns and information is distributed on time.
    • Ensure all significant ground related incidents are inspected and reported appropriately.

    Backfill Operational Management and Execution

    • Assist in the development of an Akyem underground backfill management plan (BMP) and establish and maintain systems and processes to ensure compliance to the BMP as well as the Newmont Backfill standard and Fatality risk management processes.
    • Establish, implement, document, maintain and update backfill standards, systems and processes pertaining to:
    • Optimization of the rockfill delivery system.
    • Establish, implement, document and maintain the backfill quality control system.
    • Collaborate with Mining operations to ensure backfill activities are carried out safely in accordance with plan and budget.
    • Ensure that effective processes exist for backfill to enable auditing and review of the mine design plan.
    • Ensure backfill considerations are captured in all aspects of mine design, planning and scheduling.
    • Establishing, implementing, documenting and maintaining backfill systems that monitor progress against the business plan and quarterly forecast.
    • Identify and apply best practices, and continuous improvement to improve safety, increase efficiency, improve compliance to plan and reduce cost.
    • Ensure management are kept informed about backfill issues, and this information is distributed on time.

    Functional Planning and Scheduling

    • Develop functional work plans, operating budgets, data acquisition and analysis campaigns for all short- and long-term deliverables.
    • Achieve annual business plans and quarterly forecasts related to geotechnical and backfill through ongoing monitoring and improvement.

    Additional Responsibilities

    Reporting

    • Ensure all required and statutory periodic monthly, bi-annual and annual reporting is completed and distributed on time.
    • Generate operating and capital budgets for annual business planning.
    • Generate capital requests such as Applications for Expenditure (AFE’s) and justification documentation.

    Safety and Environment

    • Act responsibly for many aspects that relate directly to safe production activities and make final decisions on the following in conjunction with the Technical Services and Productions Managers:
    • Mine extraction sequencing, which determines the buildup of stresses and rock behaviour such as seismicity.
    • Ground support selection to ensure safe working conditions for underground workers.
    • The appropriate response to ground behaviour such as rockfalls and seismicity.
    • Following the approved filling strategy.

    Personnel

    • Assign and build an underground geotechnical team as the mine moves into the operational phase.
    • Successfully work with many functions to align and coordinate the geotechnical section.
    • Work with the open pit geotechnical team to address interaction aspects between the open pit and underground operations.
    • Train the open pit geotechnical team to transition them to the underground operation.

    Your Training, Skills And Experience Checklist

    Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

    • Bachelors’ degree in Civil, Mining or Geological Engineering or a similar relevant degree.

    Additional Knowledge

    • A working knowledge of relevant Mine design software, preferably Dips, Unwedge, Phase2, Map3D and Deswik.

    Experience

    • At least five years of direct experience in Underground Geotechnical Engineering.
    • Preferred experience in supervising a team or projects.

    Skills And Abilities

    • Extensive geotechnical engineering experience in underground mines, preferably in deeper mines with stress difficulties.
    • Competent in underground excavation design, risk management, and in the use of relevant geotechnical software.
    • Exposure to project management in a cross-functional setting.

    • Potential for extreme dust particles and high heat/humidity.
    • Noise exposure within the requirements for earplugs or/and ear muffs.
    • Dark environment which requires personal attachment of lit head gear.
    • Potential for seismic activity underground.
    • Underground conditions include steep decline with section of uneven terrain.
    • Unventilated areas with asphyxiating gaseous environments.
    • Working with corrosive chemicals.

    Senior Manager, Supply Chain Operations

    About This Role

    • To provide overall supply chain site leadership, implement, continuously improve and execute Newmont’s supply chain strategy, policies and guidelines to drive shared goals and objectives across the mine site.
    • To develop supply chain vision for the site in alignment with Corporate, Regional and Site objectives and build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders.
    • To lead the team in identifying and capturing new enterprise spend areas to add value and drive cost savings.

    In This Role You Will

    Site Supply Chain Management

    • Oversee all supply chain operations to deliver efficient supply chain service. This includes all Warehouse Operations Management, Local procurement, oversight on functional roles on site such as sourcing and procurement, Inventory Management.
    • Execute Newmont’s procurement strategy, policies and guidelines to drive shared goals and objectives across the entire supply chain and specifically for goods and service-oriented categories and contracts that are site specific.
    • Develop procurement vision for the site in alignment with Corporate and Regional objectives and builds strong working relationships with internal stakeholders.

    General Foreman-Operations

    About This Role

    • To manage the underground mine infrastructure operational personnel and to coordinate with mechanical, electrical and controls functions on the operation of the associated production plant and equipment with the aim of delivering optimum plant productivity whilst maintaining the highest standards in regard to safety, efficiency, and good housekeeping.

    In This Role You Will

    Underground mine infrastructure operations oversight

    • Develop and implement operations strategies, budgets and plans to ensure the maximum availability of the fixed plant at optimum cost.
    • Collaborate with the supply chain department and maintenance planning to ensure that all the necessary materials and supplies are available to maintain the underground mine and associated facilities.
    • Oversee operations in the crushing plant and other underground mine infrastructure.
    • Oversee the development and review of the standard task procedures (STPs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs), management plans and guidelines.
    • Provide input into failure analysis studies and recommend alternative strategies for maintenance.
    • Schedule and deploy personnel, equipment and supplies necessary for the successful operation of the underground mine infrastructure.
    • Coordinate production shutdowns and start-ups of the underground mine infrastructure to minimize delays.
    • Maintain a high housekeeping standard in the areas of underground mine infrastructure.
    • Manage and control costs within own area, where possible (i.e., reduce waste, improve operational control).
    • Coordinate and execute procedural and operational projects and changes within the underground mine infrastructure areas by following the change management procedure.
    • Any other tasks or duties within the individual’s skill set as directed by the maintenance superintendent or senior mine officials.

    Underground Mine Infrastructure Operations Supervision

    • Ensure that operations team employees are being trained and developed in accordance with the company’s personnel development program.
    • Manage and supervise contractors engaged in operation related activities for the underground mine.
    • Supervise allocated staff member(s) by:
    • Promoting efficiency in all aspects of plant operation activities.
    • Providing on-the-job training, mentoring, and coaching and recommending relevant training and development courses.
    • Performing the first level of performance appraisal for direct reports.
    • Disciplining poor performance or actions (first level of disciplinary procedures).
    • Enhancing communication with staff through regular feedback, contact, meetings and briefings, etc. Conduct thorough shift handover meetings to the relevant shift / crew and transfer applicable information.

    Health, Safety and Environment

    • Comply with all Health and Safety, Loss Prevention, Environment and Social Responsibility requirements under Newmont’s Integrated Management System.
    • Accept responsibility for the health and safety of employees under or assigned to his / her supervision.
    • Provide hands-on assistance during operations activities and ensuring that safe work practices are followed.
    • Manage isolation / de-isolation of the underground mine infrastructure equipment.
    • Conduct and attend periodic safety meetings, inspections, and audits.
    • Attend monthly safety inspection and meetings.
    • Oversee that security procedures are followed to minimize the opportunities for theft of material or company property.

    Plant and Equipment Maintenance

    • Coordinate and assist operations and maintenance personnel with troubleshooting plant and equipment defects / malfunctions.
    • Perform equipment isolations, in accordance to established procedures.
    • Work with the maintenance team to achieve efficient plant and equipment performance and availability.
    • Work with the maintenance team to efficiently rectify plant and equipment breakdowns.
    • Liaise with the maintenance department in defining maintenance requirements for the underground mine infrastructure outside of regular business hours to maintain production requirements and targets.

    Reporting

    • Responsible for the compilation, operations and management of an accurate, complete and up to date schematic register for the underground mine and associated infrastructure.
    • Produce operation related reports as required and distributes to the relevant personnel and mine officials.
    • Ensure that shift handover and other meetings as required are conducted in an efficient and orderly manner.
    • Produce incident / accident reports, where required.
    • Conduct regular meetings with the operations team and other departments and personnel as required ensuring that the appropriate information is gathered or disseminated.

    Training, Skills And Experience Checklist

    • Bachelors’ Degree in Extractive Metallurgy or Chemistry or equivalent is highly desirable.
    • A trade qualification in a mechanical, electrical or automation field is highly desirable.

    • Work environment: The noise level in the office work environment is minimal, however the employee is occasionally required to operate in a safety-critical environment with hazardous
    • materials and potentially harmful / dangerous machinery and equipment. The employee will be required to work underground. Occasional exposure to noise, fumes, high temperature hazardous materials, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, slippery surfaces etc.
