    Head of Department - Engineering Projects

    The Role

    • This role reports into the CTO and is responsible for all engineering and technical disciplines of company engineering projects. The successful candidate will be managing external engineering consultants and internal projects engineering teams.

    The Responsibilities
    Project Management:

    • Identify the needs and the scope of engineering projects
    • Identify, plan mitigations, and manage technical and project execution risks for the accountable scope
    • Manage the front-end loading process through the stage-gates (scoping, PFS, DFS), obtaining stakeholder agreement before proceeding to next stages.
    • Develop to the required accuracy the project scope, basic engineering design, baseline schedules, cost estimations for specific projects to support the project owners CER submissions.
    • Facilitate and support the project owners in business case development for submission of CERs
    • Determine project time frames and priorities based on business needs, available resources, and budgeted CAPEX
    • Track project KPIs and gates review for each project in department including cost, schedule, risk, HSE assessment.
    • Liaise with external engineering and construction consultants to maintain pool of resources in all key discipline with knowledge and experience
    • Develop a pool of competent local and international contractor resources to meet site technical specifications of projects installations
    • Consolidate information and prepare a draft yearly CAPEX budget
    • Participate in the development of a 5-year CAPEX plan
    • Engaging specialist consultants for studies as required
    • Coordinating Procurement process
    • Managing Construction Contractors (national and international)
    • Completion and handover of project works in accordance with capital investment and site standard technical requirements.
    • To effectively implement engineering strategies and improvement initiatives in a dynamic, high-pressure and remote work environment.
    • To coordinate the procurement and logistics process to meet the required project schedule dates.

    Interdepartmental Collaboration:

    • Coordinate meetings with Area Managers to maintain alignment for engineering improvement priorities within a dynamic operational environment.
    • Coordinate meetings with stakeholders to develop project scope, design or concept reviews, approval of recommendations and sign off to proceed.
    • Coordinate the procurement and logistics process to ensure project delivery schedules are met.
    • Request and/or provide interdepartmental support, either planned or emergency based, for the benefit of the business overall.

    Team Development:

    • Provide management, guidance, coaching and technical assistance and support to the team, and operations, in general as well as in project management best practices
    • Prioritise allocation of work/projects to maximise performance and accelerate team development.
    • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the team to identify areas requiring improvement and implement training and coaching measures to ensure employees receive sufficient training enabling them to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner
    • Promote and develop the skills and confidence of subordinates
    • Encourage and facilitate effective and supportive communication between all team members and related departments.

    The Requirements

    • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification
    • Minimum 12 years of professional experience in the mining industry with exposure to international environment (previous expat experience)
    • Experience in working with external engineering firms in EPCM, EPC and Lumpsum contractual scheme
    • Experience in planning and implementing engineering projects for mid-tier organisations
    • Experience of working effectively in a management team environment
    • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation and build effective relationships and networks
    • Possesses strong training and mentoring skills with the ability to develop an effective team
    • Demonstrates strong conceptual skills and capacity to develop lateral and practical solutions
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time
    • A reputation for integrity and ethics
    • Demonstrated leadership skills
    • Must be proficient in English – French is highly advantageous
