    Electrical & Instrumentation Technician

    About The Job

    About This Role

    • Do you have the ability to locate and diagnose faults on electrical and instrumentation systems and equipment?
    • Do you have knowledge on electrical controls?
    • Do you have effective analysis and problem-solving skills?
    • We are looking for a motivated, organized and responsible individual to provide technical support regarding a variety of electrical and instrumentation activities within the Ahafo South mine with respect to installations, breakdowns, maintenance and repairs.

    In This Role You Will

    • Maintenance:
      • Maintain existing electrical and instrumentation equipment in the mine.
      • Investigate equipment when it fails and determine corrective measures, so that reoccurrence can be minimized.
      • Trace circuits of defective units and replace or rectify defective components.
      • Perform High Voltage switching.
      • Inspect transformers and conduct basic maintenance activities (i.e., checking temperature and advising when it should be repaired, replaced or serviced).
      • Perform basic troubleshooting on breakdowns.
      • Conduct lightning detector checks and perform any maintenance service.
      • Conduct fire detector checks and perform any maintenance service or parts replacements.
      • Conduct earth resistance tests as and when required.
      • Align, fit and assemble component parts, using hand tools, power tools, fixture, templates and microscopes.
      • Attend to breakdowns timeously, as soon as an instruction has been received to ensure that the mine continues to operate effectively.
    • Installations:
      • Work from wiring diagrams, engineering drawings and equipment specifications when making installations.
      • Make calculations for load requirements for circuits and choose the appropriate size and grade of component.
      • Install all new electrical and instrumentation equipment, as instructed by the Electrical & Instrumentation Supervisor.
      • Conduct RCD (Residual Current Devices) testing on all new electrical installations.
    • Testing:
      • Conduct statutory earth resistance testing as per compliance requirements.
      • Perform appliance testing and tagging (statutory works).
      • Team participation
      • Receive job cards from the Electrical & Instrumentation Supervisor containing daily activities.
      • Participate in daily meetings to receive feedback on the previous’ day's tasks.
      • Provide electrical and instrumentation guidelines to all Newmont departments as and when required.
    • Health and Safety:
      • Adhere and comply to all Health and Safety rules and regulations while on the job.
      • Adhere and comply to all local environmental and mining regulations of Ghana.
      • Wear and maintain adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on the job.
      • Maintain general good housekeeping standards within area of responsibility (clean, functional machinery and correctly stored tools).
      • Participate in routine site inspections to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Reporting:
      • Contribute data inputs for the following reports:
      • planned maintenance reports.
      • activity and Incident reports.
      • inspection and health & safety reports.
      • weekly breakdown reports.
      • Maintain protocol and associated channels of formal and informal reporting.

    Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

    • Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):
      • Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technician III Certificate.
      • Additional Knowledge
      • Knowledge of electric motors.
      • Knowledge of PLC, SCADA and telemetry systems.
      • Understanding of the operational regulation and protection of High Voltage equipment.
    • Experience:
      • A minimum of 4 years’ mechanical maintenance experience in a mining environment.

    • The position is located at the Ahafo South site. The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job:
      • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Physical Demands:
      • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to work in confined spaces and will be exposed to extreme vibration.
    • Work Environment:
      • The employee is required to operate in a safety-critical environment with hazardous materials and potentially harmful / dangerous machinery and equipment.
      • The employee is frequently exposed to noise more than 85 decibels, and to fumes, high temperature hazardous materials, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, vibration, slippery surfaces etc.

    Mechanical Technician - Auxiliary Equipment

    • Join the Mine Maintenance team as Mechanical Technician – Auxiliary Equipment where you will conduct mechanical maintenance, deployment, troubleshooting, replacement, repair and testing of equipment on drills, shovels and support equipment, according to specifications and safety standards to ensure equipment availability and optimal mining operations and production.

    In This Role You Will

    • Mechanical Maintenance:
      • Perform preventive maintenance routines and inspections.
      • Generate a work order before the remedial or repair work is carried out.
      • Raise a job card for work to be carried out, if any problems are identified.
      • Accomplish work objectives by determining own work schedule, coordinate with support services.
      • Attend to items on the maintenance planning schedule, as and when required.
      • Perform installations, maintenance and repair activities in accordance with OEM specifications.
      • Perform routine maintenance on all mechanical equipment and ensure effective functioning, including but not limited to maintenance of drills, shovels and support equipment.
      • Perform a variety of other maintenance tasks, such as breakdowns and preventative maintenance.
      • Disassemble and assemble various major components for repair works.
      • Ensure that all lock-out / tag-outs are completed, before any work is carried out.
      • Provide information in terms of sufficient spare availability and stock levels.
      • Assist specialists in making more complex repairs.
      • Work within established procedures and operating manuals, as set out by the OEMs and best practice.
      • Trouble shooting
      • Carry out inspection on all mechanical equipment daily and record all findings from the inspection.
      • Check all malfunctioned machinery and equipment and conduct root cause analysis to diagnose whether to repair or replace.
      • Analyze specified problems and issues to find the best technical solutions within OEM specifications.
      • Strive to reduce downtime and minimize costs.
    • Reporting:
      • Maintain records of maintenance and repair work.
      • Produce daily reports indicating the jobs for the day and submit the report to the Supervisor.
    • Health, Safety and Environment:
      • Deliver own prescribed outcomes and/or provide support services by applying Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environment systems, policies and protocols.
      • Inspect the equipment to check and identify any mechanical and basic electrical risks.

    Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

    • Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):
      • Mechanical Engineering Technician I or II certificate.
      • Mechanic Trade training or apprenticeship.
      • MINCOM Inspection Engineer Certificate is an advantage.
    • Additional Knowledge:
      • Detailed knowledge of all operating circuits.
      • Working knowledge of process plant equipment.
      • Working knowledge of process operations, particularly crushing, SAG and Ball Milling, Leach / CIL / CIP, elution and electrowinning, and tailings storage facility.
      • A valid driver’s license.
    • Experience:
      • A minimum of 3 years’ mechanical maintenance experience in a mining plant/process environment, preferably repairing and maintaining drill, shovels and support equipment experience.
    • Technical Skills:
      • Sound communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to read and understand technical documentation such as technical instructions, test procedures and technical manuals.
      • Ability to identify problems and to report by using technical names of equipment parts.
      • Ability to utilize the mechanical tools to install, maintain and repair equipment and power plant.
      • Ability to manage the quality of operations in accordance with the quality standards of the organization and international best practice.
