    Accountant

    Job Description

    Finance employees receive, account for, monitor, and design internal controls to safeguard sacred funds (donated confidentially in obedience to God's commandments) for the Church's religious mission under the direction of senior ecclesiastical leaders.

    This position is an entry level professional accounting position in which the incumbent applies accounting principles in working with specialized accounting records and reports and is responsible for assisting in the day to day maintenance of a complete and accurate general ledger and in preparing basic financial reports.

    Responsibilities

     

    Success is typically measured by the degree to which accuracy is demonstrated in maintaining assigned ledgers, records, accounts, etc. Schedules and deadlines are expected to be met, and proficiency is demonstrated on required accounting systems.

     

    In General, Incumbents In This Position Perform The Following Types Of Functions

    An Accountant 1 performs accounting functions in a variety of different settings throughout the Church.

    • Initiate general ledger file maintenance so that financial statement presentations will be accurate and meaningful.
    • Reconcile accounts, review reconciliations, and make sure that all outstanding items are properly cleared.
    • Prepare special studies and reports for departments and organizations as required.
    • Prepare journal entries and other adjustments to correct errors.
    • Analyze budget requests and explain any budgetary changes resulting from increased costs or changes in programs.
    • Consolidate accounting information for use in accounting statements and summaries.
    • Review expenditures against budget and make necessary reconciliations, investigations, and correcting entries.
    • Assist in preparing various financial estimates and expense reports.
    • Draft correspondence to appropriate parties regarding any differences that require investigation or further action.
    • Review and monitor invoices submitted for payment which exceed certain dollar amounts as defined by policy.
    • Audit project accounts for compliance to policy and correspond with appropriate parties regarding the status of these projects.

    Qualifications

    Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting (or Finance or Business Management). No post graduate professional accounting experience is required for this position. Incumbents must demonstrate a well-grounded knowledge of financial and accounting theory.

    Preferred:A knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.

    Human Relations Skills

    Incumbents will demonstrate courtesy, tact and effectiveness in dealing with others in everyday working relationships, including contacts with others to request or provide information.

    Challenges And Complex Situations

    Incumbents will apply college-level theoretical knowledge they have acquired as they gain an understanding of Church accounting systems, and policies and procedures.

    Major Decisions Referred To Others

    Any decision outside of well-defined guidelines and policies are referred to the supervisor or to a more senior level accountant.

    • Incumbents typically work under close supervision while gaining an understanding of Church accounting systems.
    • Incumbents work within a firm set of guidelines and policies.
    • Incumbents make appropriate decisions using generally accepted accounting principles regarding transactions affecting assigned organizations.

    Management Control Auditor

    Job Description

    Finance and Records employees work with management to ensure that controls are adequate to safeguard the assets of the Church against theft, unauthorized use, or waste, and to perform essential work in a simple and affordable way. MCAs are to identify and fix complicated business problems. This requires a firm understanding of complex business processes and information technology systems and related controls. They are expected to be internal control and process experts who possess organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills. They are also expected to exercise wise judgment. The MCA 1 is expected to be acquiring the skills and attributes of a competent department or area controller and help ensure the following: (1) risks related to the Church's mission are addressed proactively; (2) adequate internal controls exist; (3) defalcations are reduced; (4) and their department/Area receives cleaner audit reports.

    Responsibilities

    MCAs should not be "tied down" by operational matters to allow them, under the direction of the controller, to enable the controller to answer the following questions: (1) How well are the key internal controls functioning in your department/Area? (2) What are you doing to better enable the Church to accomplish its mission?

    The MCA 1 works with complex issues and/or functions. Specific responsibilities include:

    • Work with operational management to identify the most significant risks (both financial and non-financial) to the organization.
    • Work with the controls committee to prioritize these risks and develop plans to: (1) Monitor and report on key internal controls, and (2) Improve process efficiency and effectiveness.
    • Work with operational management to improve process efficiency and effectiveness.
    • In-depth ability to process map to support both an understanding of current process status and support improvement efforts such as systems implementations.
    • Act as a project manager for process improvement projects, when appropriate.
    • At the direction of the controller perform investigations into sensitive matters that is performed in a professional and discrete manner.
    • Communicate and present to senior financial and operational management in a professional manner.

    Qualifications

    The MCA 1 is expected to have extensive financial experience at responsible levels and be acquiring the skills and attributes of a competent department or area controller (Must have at least 8 years of related experience).

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related business field
    • Has required industry certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or international equivalent.
    • Has the ability to identify and fix complicated business problems.
    • Has a firm understanding of complex business processes and information technology systems and related controls.
    • Is acquiring expertise in reviewing, developing, or implementing internal controls and processes, similar to a department or area controller.
    • Has organizational, interpersonal, and project management skills, and exercises wise judgment.

    Accountant, Senior

    Job Description

    This position is a fully-qualified or journey-level professional accounting position in which the incumbent provides professional accounting expertise in applying appropriate accounting principles to analyze present financial operations, administrative costs and obligations, and estimate future income and expenditures; assembling and analyzing data and transactions; preparing statements and reports; and performing internal audits of system accounts. As such, an incumbent is responsible for the more complex activities associated with maintaining ledger accounts and developing financial statements and reports.

    Responsibilities

    An Accountant, Senior performs the more complex accounting functions in a variety of different settings throughout the Church. In general, incumbents in this position perform the following types of functions:

    Bachelor's degree in Accounting (or Finance or Business Management) is required. CMA, CPA or MBA preferred. Incumbents must demonstrate a well-grounded knowledge of financial and accounting theory and a knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles preferred.

    A minimum of four to five years of professional accounting experience is required for this position. Familiarity with Church accounting systems is preferred. A graduate degree in Accounting or Finance, MBA, or CPA, may be considered an equivalent of one year of this experience. Should have the ability to analyze complex accounting problems and propose changes in the accounting system. Should be conversant with and have a familiarity with various standard Church accounting reports. Should have a good understanding of Church financial policies and procedures.

    Analyst, Financial, 1

     

    Job Description

    Finance employees receive, account for, monitor, and design internal controls to safeguard sacred funds (donated confidentially in obedience to God's commandments) for the Church's religious mission under the direction of senior ecclesiastical leaders.

    To prepare, analyze, and review financial statements and budgets. Prepare management reports, and perform internal control reviews and some accounting functions. Customers, including operational and financial managers and supervisors, will receive information that will help them conduct the business and financial affairs of a specific small unit or division in a legal and professional manner.

    Responsibilities

    Prepare and analyze budgets and financial statements using information from operating statements, account ledgers, work order reports, project tracking systems, etc., for one unit or a division of a department. Anticipate future needs. Analytically review budget and financial statements. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Identify trends and potential areas of concern. Initiate basic adjustments, as needed, and report actions. Prepare management reports. Investigate alternatives. Create reports, charts, and graphs illustrating findings. Recommend adjustments. Perform onsite internal control reviews. Perform some accounting functions. May be required due to staff size or limitations. However, the thrust of the position is gathering financial information, analysis, and recommending financial corrective action. Ensure correct coding to the general ledger. Under supervision, performs work that is varied and that may be somewhat difficult in character, but usually involves limited responsibility.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Accounting (or Finance or Business Management) is required. CMA, CPA or MBA preferred. Four to five years of relevant experience in accounting, auditing, business management, or equivalent.

    Demonstrate understanding of accounting principles and Church accounting systems. Must operate a personal computer and have knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet. Must be able to learn new software.
